Monroe County Fire Rescue understands the importance of emergency response planning for a variety of emergencies within the Florida Keys community.

As part of this effort, fire department personnel conduct annual pre-incident or pre-fire plans for commercial properties. The purpose of the pre-fire plan is to ensure a coordinated and safe response in the event of a fire, or other emergency situation.

These pre-fire plans allow first responders to become familiar with new and existing structures within their respective zones. The information gathered allows firefighters and emergency responders to quickly assess fires, or other emergencies, and initiate response with minimal delays. The more specific and applicable information responders can obtain prior to an incident, the better equipped they are to respond quickly and effectively, which reduces the potential for injuries and property damage.

Fire Marshal R.L. Colina said that this exercise is a crucial part of emergency planning and response.  “The faster that our first responders can locate, assess, access, and mitigate any emergency; the sooner the incident will be contained.”

In addition to working with the businesses on their planning, fire personnel have also been distributing informational pamphlets and business signage about the protective measures Monroe County is taking in response to COVID-19, including the importance of wearing facial coverings when inside businesses. Additional signage can be found at under business information.
