[ARCHIVED] TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE

A cold front approaching the Florida Keys in the southeast Gulf of Mexico this afternoon is expected to stall and become a stationary front near or just to the north. This, in combination with a broad area of low pressure gradually developing in the northwest Caribbean Sea by the weekend, will result in increasing showers and thunderstorms and a focus for potentially heavy rainfall. Primary impacts include:

  • Rainfall generally from 3 to 7 inches falling over the period from Thursday night through Sunday night.
  • The highest threat for heavy rains with the potential for localized street and poor drainage area flooding will be from late Thursday night through Saturday night.
  • With tides running above normal, any potential flooding threat would be worse around the times of high tide.
  • A few thunderstorms producing brief wind gusts near 40 mph and dangerous lightning strikes.

Tropical Outlook:

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical wave over the west-central Caribbean Sea, which is expected to develop a broad area of low pressure over the western Caribbean Sea by Thursday night or Friday. This system has a medium chance for development into a tropical cyclone, and mainly NOT before this weekend. Any potential development is currently expected to remain well to the southwest of the Florida Keys through at least the middle of next week.
